WSSU Football Set to Play Ohio Dominican for Home Opener at Bowman Gray Stadium Saturday Night

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University football team will host Ohio Dominican University in the home opener at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.

Dynamic Quarterback and Skill Players Lead the Rams

The Rams are led by senior quarterback CJ Leak, who passed for 1,794 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Leak also rushed for 501 yards and eight touchdowns. A pair of All-CIAA performers return on the offensive side of the ball in senior wide receiver Donovan Green and offensive lineman Sam Booker.

Green, a preseason All-CIAA selection, caught 48 passes for 785 yards. Booker, a second-team All-CIAA selection, was a key cog in the Rams’ offensive line.

Defensive Dominance

WSSU’s defense will be led by a trio of All-CIAA preseason selections in senior linebacker Eric Jackson, senior defensive back Omari Alexander, and sophomore defensive back D’Mitri Miller.

Jackson was the Rams’ leading tackler last season with 76 total tackles. Alexander had four interceptions and 12 pass breakups, while Miller had three interceptions.

Scouting Ohio Dominican

Ohio Dominican is coming off a 5-6 season in 2021. The Panthers are led by senior quarterback Evan Ernst, who passed for 1,850 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Junior wide receiver Chris Edmonds is their top returning receiver after catching 42 passes for 800 yards last season.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Anthony Vannucci is the Panthers’ leading returning tackler with 78 tackles last fall. Senior defensive back Cam Sanders had four interceptions last season.

Tickets for the game are available online at WSSU’s website or at the gate on game day. The Rams are hoping for a big crowd for the home opener and are encouraging fans to come out and support the team.
